Today’s Reading: Ezra 2; Ezra 3; Luke 8
Scripture: Luke 8:4-8
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown."
When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
Observation: The farmer sows his seed. And as any good farmer does, he observes the soil as he sows. Now I'm not a farmer, but is seems to me that most farmers would only spread their seed on the good areas of soil where the seed had the best opportunity to produce. But the farmer in this story doesn't do it that way. He distributes his seed everywhere equally. Why? Because this seed is the Gospel and it is imperative that all soil gets an opportunity to receive the seed -- even soil that looks hard, or rocky, or thorny. I think that even among these apparently unfruitful soils, there may be a patch here or a patch there where the seed will go in and take root and produce. But even if not, this farmer is determined that no one could ever say, "You missed this soil over here! You never gave it a chance!"
Application: I need to learn from this farmer. I only want to put the seed out where I think it will grow. I don't want to waste my time sharing the Gospel where obviously people won't say "yes!" Only problem with this is how can I really know? It is only my pride that makes me think I can tell in advance where the seed will produce. I have too much confidence in my own ESP (Expert Seed Prognostication) and not enough confidence in the Seed itself. Plus, when I say "I don't want to waste my time," what's up with that?!? Who am I kidding? My time, my whole life, belongs to God anyway. And it's not as if I spend every moment so wisely. (Watching TV, playing computer games, surfing eBay... these aren't exactly the epitome of careful time management.) So I need to recalibrate my thinking. I need to share the Gospel every chance I get. I do not like this idea. I'm actually not wanting to write this because it means I have to change -- I have to get much bolder -- I have to be more evangelistic. But I guess if it's good enough for the Sower in Jesus' story, it's good enough for me. Lord, help me!
Prayer: Father, I believe. Help me in my unbelief. As intimidating as this thought is for me, Lord, I know it is right. Thank You for speaking to my heart this morning. Help me to see the opportunities all around me to spread Your seed onto every soil, regardless of my opinion of it. And, Lord of the Harvest, bring increased fruitfulness into my life. Help me to win souls. Give me more souls for Your Kingdom.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Amazing Words / Topic: Forgiveness
Today’s Reading: Ezra 1; Psalm 84; Psalm 85; Luke 7
Scripture: Luke 7:47-50
47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."
48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"
50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Observation: These are amazing words: "Your sins are forgiven." I think that there are no more powerful words that could be spoken. And not just spoken, but actually done. The people around Jesus thought He was overstepping. They didn't understand, and they didn't receive forgiveness. The woman knew that He meant what He said -- and He could and would deliver on His word. And she received forgiveness. Oh how sweet that must have been for her! The removal of the tarnish of years of broken living. Oh happy day!
Application: This is the reason I follow Jesus. There is no other one who can forgive sins. Only Jesus. And He delights in removing the weights and burdens from my shoulders -- all I need do is love much and believe. Like this woman. This woman bowed at His feet. She poured a fortune's worth of expensive perfume on Him. She wept and kissed Him. She didn't care what anyone thought. She just wanted Jesus.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

'Tis so sweet to trust in JesusPrayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to make it possible that my sins might be forgiven. And thank You, Jesus, for dying for my sins, and taking the penalty due me. I thank You that the words, "Your sins are forgiven" applies to my life because of the blood of Jesus. May I live in the joy and power of Your forgiveness every day and may I extend forgiveness to others.
Just to take Him at His word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know "thus saith the Lord"
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus precious Jesus
O for grace to trust Him more
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Religious / Topic: Walking In Truth
Today’s Reading: Daniel 11; Daniel 12; Luke 6
Scripture: Luke 6:6-10
6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
Observation: What a contrast: Jesus, who is God, caring and healing; vs. The Religious (Pharisees and teachers of the law), with no concern for hurting people, claiming to represent God, judging and conspiring. Notice that what they are focused on is Sabbath Violations -- they have no interest in seeing a man healed -- no their only concern is of their pet issue: "Don't do anything on the Sabbath that we wouldn't do!" Of course, since The Religious never perform healing due to their lack of true spiritual power, anyone who heals anytime is suspect. But if someone heals on the Sabbath... well, that's a Violation! When Jesus asks them to think, really think, about their Sabbath beliefs they remain silent. (See Mark 3:3-5.) Dante wrote: "The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of great moral crises maintain their neutrality." The silence of The Religious is a sign of their great personal moral wickedness. And once the man is healed, they immediately begin to conspire of "what they might do to Jesus." So let me get this straight: it is not OK to heal on the Sabbath (of course God does all healing), but it is just fine to have a meeting to conspire to kill someone you hate? Interesting values.
Application: My focus must be on Jesus. And I need to listen to the Lord to examine my beliefs, especially as they are manifested in my words and actions. It is easy to see how bad the Religious were in this story. But I can fall into similar kinds of blindness and hypocrisy without knowing it and, unless I listen to God and the people around me, I can dig in -- remaining in that place of dysfunction and wickedness, harming others and myself. And I can feel righteous and justified in the process. Evil is insidious. None of us is above the pull of it. We have to stay open and seeking -- confessing and repenting -- if we will be truly free and growing in the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that You are ever calling me and that You enable me to hear Your voice above the call of evil. I choose to respond to Your call and to forsake sin and the daily temptations that are common to all humanity: lust, greed, pride, and sloth. Strengthen me in my inner being to hear You more clearly and to respond with instantaneous obedience to Your initial promptings. Keep me from entering the realm of the Religious. I want to be Yours one hundred percent.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Humbling Tie / Topic: Humility
Today’s Reading: Daniel 9; Daniel 10; Psalm 123; Luke 5
Scripture: Luke 5:27-32
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"
31 Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Observation: Oh the religious types! Jesus had them in His day and we have them in ours. They want religion but only the external, showy kind. They liked being around Jesus, but who wouldn't? But He often rubbed them the wrong way. They wanted Him to go with them to their "nice" gatherings with the "nice" people. Here He was at a rowdy party with "sinners"! Oh my! But I love Jesus' answer. "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Application: It's the sinners who Jesus came for. That's what I am. That is the thing that all true believers have in common -- our sin that brought us to need Jesus in the first place. Those who hide, or are unaware, or in denial, or don't admit their sin don't need saving. I had a man tell me once that he didn't need a savior and didn't need anyone to die for him. He was right. And he was wrong.
Bottom line: Remembering that it is my sin that is my first point of connection with other believers will help me keep my feet on the ground and my heart humble. I want to avoid becoming religious. Religious people tend toward pride and judgmentalism. Stay humble and keep it simple: I'm a sinner saved by grace.
Prayer: Father, thank You for saving this sinner. I am blessed to be Your child and I ask You to help me to keep my heart in the place of humility and simplicity. I just want to be open to all of Your goodness so that I can be fully transformed into the image of Jesus.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Heavy Lifting / Topic: Spiritual Warfare
Today’s Reading: Daniel 7; Daniel 8; Psalm 137; Luke 4
Scripture: Daniel 7:15, 28; 8:17, 27
Daniel 7:15 "I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me...
28 "This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself..."
Daniel 8:17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate...
27 I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days... I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
Observation: I love Daniel -- both the book and the man. And one of the things I love about it is the fact that Daniel is real -- he's authentic. Here he shares the emotional weight of the visions he saw. I notice how severely impacted he was, maybe even traumatized by the experiences of the visions. Check out the language: "deeply troubled," "terrified," "exhausted and lay ill for several days," etc. These visions had no small effect on Daniel. He was actually laid up physically because of the emotional drain of the experience -- he took a real emotional hit.
Application: What I take from this is that there is a level of spiritual function that has a high cost associated with it. It is intense. Spiritual warfare is probably the most appropriate term for this but there most of what we call "spiritual warfare" does not approach the level of what I see here in Daniel.
Bottom line: I must prepare myself for greater depths and dimensions of spiritual life. There are demands that Daniel was able to address that required great personal spiritual strength. That is what I want to have and that is where I want to be. It's time to grow up and step up.
Prayer: Lord, help me. I have been functioning on a level spiritually that is way below what I read here of my brother Daniel. I want to be able to be used by You to make the kind of impact that Daniel did. Help me to grow and strengthen myself to be fit and able to handle the heavy lifting of spiritual service.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Writing On My Wall / Topic: Hearing From God
Today’s Reading: Daniel 5; Daniel 6; Psalm 130; Luke 3
Scripture: Daniel 5:24-26
24 "...[God] sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 "This is the inscription that was written:
Mene , Mene , Tekel , Parsin
26 "This is what these words mean..."
Observation: God sent a hand to write on the wall to tell King Belshazzar what He thought of him. For Belshazzar, this was terrifying and the message grim and foreboding. As I read about this experience, I had this thought: if God wanted to write on my wall to tell me what He thinks of me, what would it say? Would it be good news or bad news? I think it would be mostly good news. (I often have a sense in my spirit (usually during intimate times of worship) that God is pleased with me.) But, there could likely also be some words of correction, disappointment, maybe even rebuke.
Application: I need to be giving more thoughtful consideration to what God would say, and then purpose to actually look for the writing on the wall and listen for His voice. I think God does communicate to me directly more than I know. He is sending more than I am receiving. I think I don't tune in sometimes because I mainly expect judgment from God, and I forget that, as my Father, He also wants to give me praise, encouragement, and comfort. That sounds odd to say that God wants to give me praise, but I think it's true. I know I like to praise my own children and grandchildren -- and they don't have to be perfect for me to want to praise them. I believe God is the same with me.
Prayer: So, Father, help me to read the writing on my wall. Help me to hear Your voice, to know just what it is that You think of me. I want and need to know. And I want to please You and make You proud of me. You are my Father. Thank You for adopting me as Your own child. Help me to stop striving to be perfect and to rest in Your encouraging and nurturing love.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Night Crew / Topic: The Invisible Realm
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 47; Ezekiel 48; Luke 2
Scripture: Luke 2:8-9
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Observation: These shepherds are out at work, minding their sheep and minding their own business. Then God shows up -- an impressive angelic image and the glow of God appear out of the darkness -- and they are freaked out. The text tells us "they were terrified." Of course, we now know that the angels were there to announce the birth of Jesus. But the shepherds first response was fear.
Application:
#1 You never know when God will show up. These shepherds were the night crew. They were the last ones hired, or they drew the short straw. In any event, all the preferred shepherds had gone home for the night to be with their families and these guys were stuck watching the sheep all night long out in the fields. The last thing they expected was an angel to show up. You never know when God will show up.
#2 "...and they were terrified." I often think how great it would be to see the Lord or to see an angel, but the first reaction would inevitably be shock -- terrifying and overwhelming. That's pretty much the universal reaction I find in the Bible whenever someone sees and angel: people are afraid. The truth is that while I believe in the invisible realm, with angels and demons and all, I have only a vague idea of what is actually going on. And were I to actually be in the middle it, it would be a real shock. I will see it and I will be shocked, but I will adjust and eventually get comfortable with it. In fact, I will be able to operate in that realm as will all of God's people. (The truth is, we are supposed to be operating in that realm through spiritual warfare now.)
Prayer: Lord, You and Your forces are working behind the scenes on behalf of Your children. Thank You. Help me to function with positive power in the spiritual realm. Help all Your people to get the vision for interacting with the spiritual realm to make things happen. Show me how -- teach me, Lord. And help me to be ready whenever You show up.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Righteous Standards / Topic: Weights And Measures
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 45; Ezekiel 46; Luke 1
Scripture: Ezekiel 45:9-12
9 " 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You have gone far enough, O princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression and do what is just and right. Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign LORD. 10 You are to use accurate scales, an accurate ephah and an accurate bath. 11 The ephah and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel is to consist of twenty gerahs. Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.' "
Observation: God speaks through Ezekiel to the "princes of Israel," that is, those who have the wealth and power at the highest levels. And in this passage He warns them to use weights and measures that are honest and fair. One of the means that can be used to oppress and keep people poor is unfair or dishonest business practices, such as weights and measures that change depending on whether one is buying or selling, exorbitant interest rates, excessive fees and charges, etc. God cares about these matters. He wants His people to not only have righteous standards in their lives, but also in the weights and measures and business practices.
Application: If I want to live in a way that pleases God, it is more than a commitment to study of the Bible and worship . It is a commitment to live in justice and righteousness in every area of my life. I believe that Christians often neglect to consider how their business dealings reflect on their faith. It matters to God that I am totally honest and above board with how I do business with others. Paying my bills, dealing with honesty and integrity in whatever I do, being truthful and not deceptive in my business dealings and communication -- these are all aspects of my life that God cares about. And I need to care about them as well, giving careful thought and effort to uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty in all business interactions. To do less is to dishonor and displease God.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that You want Your people to reflect righteousness and excellence in every area of our lives. You want to show Yourself through me as a God of truth and justice. Help me to never compromise or act selfishly or unfairly in the way I do business with others. May I "do unto others as I would have them do unto me" in my business dealings as well as every other area of my life. I want to live in a way that pleases You.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Free, Fresh Water / Topic: Refresh
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 42; Ezekiel 43; Ezekiel 44; Revelation 22
Scripture: Revelation 22:17
The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
Observation: Come! The invitation goes out to everyone. "Anyone thirsty out there? Come! Take the free gift of the water of life." That is the message and method of God. "If you want it, come and get it. If you have a need, seek to have it met." I love the openness and ready availability of God's provision. I also notice that this invitation is coming from "The Spirit and the bride." The Spirit is, of course, the Holy Spirit of God. Who is the bride? It's us, the church. We, in agreement with the spirit say, "come and get refreshed."
Application: I better have something that refreshes when they come. Tired old clichés, worn out religious language, even my own moldy testimonies won't refresh. I have to have something new, fresh, and alive. I am supposed to be dispensing the water of life -- living water. I need to be immersed in Jesus and overflowing so that when the thirsty come in, I'm not dry myself, but I have something fresh and refreshing to give to them.
Prayer: Lord, help me live in the fresh now with You. Thank You for Your openhanded, gracious, giving nature. Thank You that You offer the water of life to all who are thirsty. Help me and all Your people to be filled and overflowing so that we can deliver the goods to those who are seeking.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Everything New / Topic: Future Blessings
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 40; Ezekiel 41; Psalm 128; Revelation 21
Scripture: Revelation 21:3-5
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!"...
Observation: I love this phrase: "the old order of things has passed away." And this one: "I am making everything new." And this one: "God himself with be with them." There is a day coming when everything that we know now will be changed. The world around us and our lives themselves will be all new and unfamiliar -- and it will be great! We won't miss the "old order" one bit. It will be sweet -- God's re-creation for us to enjoy. We messed up the first creation. There will be no messing up the new creation. It will be blessedly perfect and full of joy!
Application: Keep looking up. He is coming with rewards for those who love his kingdom and his appearing. As verse 4 says, "he will wipe every tear from their eyes." Whatever sorrows, griefs, and sufferings we endure here and now he will comfort and soothe. All will be new -- and perfect. Thank You, Lord.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your great and precious promises which I know are true and trustworthy, because they come from You. You have blessed me so much here and now, but You have also given me so much to look forward to. I can hardly wait to be with You physically. Thank you, Lord.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Day Of Reckoning / Topic: Judgment
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 38; Ezekiel 39; Psalm 145; Revelation 20
Scripture: Ezekiel 38:18-23
18 "This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD. 19 In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. 20 The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. 21 I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. 23 And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.'"
Observation: What a scary scene! It's like the combination of all natural disaster movies. And this passage is foretelling how God will react against a future military assault against Israel. He intervenes big time! And notice what God says about why He reacts as He does: "my hot anger will be aroused...in my zeal and fiery wrath..."! That is scary talk coming from God. And look at the manifestation of God's "hot anger": immense earthquake, rock slides, plague, flash floods, hailstones, volcanic eruptions. This is excellent incentive to stay close to God!
Application: The truth is, God is capable of indescribable destruction. Most of the time, we don't see it, thank You, Lord. But there is coming a day when, basically, God says, "That's it. I've had enough!" And He will let loose with a destructive barrage that will make "shock and awe" look like a table game. We serve an awesome God. He is loving and just. And His love of goodness and justice means He hates wickedness and injustice and must eventually deal with those who choose to engage in them. The inevitable outcome is that a day of reckoning is coming when God will use His power to sweep away those who love what God hates.
Bottom line: Serve God. Stay close to Him. Sometimes it may seem like the more challenging path, but ultimately we are saved while those who chose the easy path of evil and indulgence will suffer.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that You are just and righteous and that You have a plan and the means to right all wrongs and bring the scales of justice and mercy into perfect balance. Help us to represent You strongly and boldly. May we stand with You in the day of reckoning.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
- Special note 1: Today's reading is fantastic! Take time to read it all. The Ezekiel passages speak of the extremity of God's judgment (you definitely want to stay on His good side!), and it parallels the Revelation account of judgment against satan and the incorrigibly evil element of humanity. Psalm 145 is a wonderful song of comfort, rejoicing, and celebration of God's goodness.
- Special note 2: The number of comments has dropped off quite a bit. I want to make a simple request that for the rest of September, everyone who reads this blog would leave a comment and at least say, "hi." (Kind of like signing a guest book.) Would you please do that? Just click at the bottom of the post where it gives the number of comments. And don't forget to click on this link and read Cynthia's blog as well -- and leave a comment there too. Thanks.

Title: The Victory Shout / Topic: Future Rewards
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 36; Ezekiel 37; Psalm 110; Revelation 19
Scripture: Revelation 19:6-7
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
"Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!"
Observation: The end has come. God wins. His people, billions of men, women, and children have witnessed the final, awesome dispatching of satan and his minions to their eternal doom. The saints' song of praise at first sounds like the roar of Niagra Falls combined with a thunder storm! It is loud and powerful! They are shouting a cheer or chant of victory. They are so happy -- their reward is in sight. God is on the throne, evil is no more, all struggles are over.
Application: Oh how wonderful this day will be! I am so looking forward to the day when all those who trusted in Jesus, who endured through the times of sorrowful testing and trials, will be vindicated by the establishment of God's ultimate rulership on this planet. All things will be made right, all injustice will be corrected, the liars and mockers will be silenced, all the evildoers will be punished, and those who suffered will be restored, healed, and lifted up. O happy day.
Bottom line: Endure through all the hardship. Stand faithful with God because He wins in the end.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are sovereign Lord over the universe. You are the great Creator, and the Ultimate Power and Ruler over all created things, for You created them and they exist by Your word and according to Your will. Help me to remember Your ultimate power when I am in the midst of discouragement, doubt, or difficulty. Help me to recall the great blessing and reward You have promised to all who will remain faithful to You until the end.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Watchman / Topic: Leadership Responsibility
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 33; Ezekiel 34; Ezekiel 35; Revelation 18
Scripture: Ezekiel 33:7-9
7 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 9 But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.
Observation: God lays it out for Ezekiel. He has been given a responsibility to God's people -- he is a watchman. I think watchman is a pretty good definition of the prophetic ministry: someone who has an excellent vantage point to see looming threats and communicates those threats to the people. His vantage point is his relationship with God. He sees because God shows him.
Application: I am also a watchman, as are all who are in positions of spiritual responsibility in the Kingdom of God. I have to be on the lookout for what might be coming that could do damage to those in my care. There are three basic responsibilities:
Bottom line: Being in spiritual leadership is something has great demands: I must be diligent in my relationship with Jesus, give serious attentiveness to the flock and environment, and work to communicate effectively.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are the Great Shepherd. I want to fulfill the responsibilities You have entrusted to my care in Your service. Assist and strengthen me to do it well. Forgive me for the times I have lost focus or become distracted or discouraged. Help me for the sake of those I lead that I may bring the fullest blessing possible into their lives by being a true and faithful shepherd like You.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application: I am also a watchman, as are all who are in positions of spiritual responsibility in the Kingdom of God. I have to be on the lookout for what might be coming that could do damage to those in my care. There are three basic responsibilities:
- Keep the channel open with God. This speaks of an ongoing, living, vibrant relationship where God speaks and I hear reliably. I can't be casual about this -- people are counting on me to hear from God. God's voice is my early warning system. Without it my work is ineffective.
- Pay attention. I have to be on the lookout for threats and trends that could impact those God has entrusted to me. I can't slack off or forget. And I have to pay attention to the lives of the people themselves because sometimes the danger comes not from without, but from within.
- Speak the truth boldly and persuasively. Once God shows me something, I must communicate with skill and power so that my message is clear and impactful. And sometimes these messages can be challenging and hard to receive. It takes courage to say something that people don't want to hear.
Bottom line: Being in spiritual leadership is something has great demands: I must be diligent in my relationship with Jesus, give serious attentiveness to the flock and environment, and work to communicate effectively.

Title: The Old, Old Story / Topic: Transforming Truth
Today’s Reading: Daniel 3; Daniel 4; Psalm 81; Revelation 17
Scripture: Daniel 3:24-27
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?"
They replied, "Certainly, O king."
25 He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."
26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!"
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
Observation: "Tell me the old, old story..." That's a line out of the old hymnal that I remember singing in church when I was a kid. And reading this story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego brings back memories of Sunday School class and the flannelgraph. The teacher took a cutout of the "three Hebrew children" and laid it in the middle of another cutout of a fearful-looking "flaming furnace." They were all tied up with lots of rope as they went in. (They got thrown into the furnace because they refused to worship the king's golden idol.) Then another cutout was substituted for the first one showing the three boys standing and smiling with no ropes binding them. Last, the teacher pulled them out of the furnace, like they were walking out, and they stood next to the image of the king and the large, golden idol. I love this old story!
Application: I love it because it teaches so many great spiritual and character lessons: courage, not yielding to peer pressure, God's power to protect, how God's truth trumps the enemy's blustery lies, and many more -- these are all there in the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And while I have heard this story dozens of time, I still have something to learn from it. I always hoped I would have the courage to stand alone against the king and all the people with him. I pray that I would.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for these three Hebrew children that still teaches me about courage, and faith, and what it truly important. And thank You that truth endures. Help me to apply these lessons today and every day.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Be Like Daniel / Topic: Great Character
Today’s Reading: Daniel 1; Daniel 2; Revelation 16
Scripture: Daniel 2:25-28
25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, "I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means."
26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), "Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?"
27 Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these..."
Observation: I love Daniel. The book and the man. The above scripture is a perfect example why. First, when King Nebuchadnezzar (one doosey of a name) decides to wipe out all the wise men because none of them can read his mind, Daniel keeps his head (literally). He appeals for more time and he prays. When God reveals King what's-his-name's dream to Daniel and he appears before the King, Daniel has the opportunity to toot his own horn, or put a feather in his cap, or strut his stuff, or any other stupid phrases that refer to self-promotion. But Daniel does no such thing. He actually begins by correcting King N when he assumes (a dangerous thing to do) that Daniel has the power to read minds. Daniel says, "nope, it's not me, it's God." (PMS Paraphrase) I love the fact that Daniel is not only wise, he is very humble. What a great guy.
Application: Be like Daniel.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for including Daniel's life stories in our Bible. It is so great to read about this young man who, though a prisoner in a foreign land, found a way to honor both God and men. Help me to be like Daniel, to keep my head, and always honor You.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Unstoppable Love Of God / Topic: Hope
Today’s Reading: Lamentations 3; Lamentations 4; Lamentations 5; Revelation 15
Scripture: Lamentations 3:19-22
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
Observation: Jeremiah is in the midst of deep misery -- even despair. But he catches himself and stops to reflect on the one thing that can bring a glimpse of hope, even amidst the death and destruction around him: the unstoppable love of God!
Application: No matter how deep my difficulties may be -- even with the resultant depression -- there is always a place to go for hope. And that place is into the arms of my loving Heavenly Father, "for his compassions never fail."
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for Your unfailing love, Your great compassion, and Your never-ending mercy. The fact that You continue to love me and reach out to me is amazing. Thank You. May Your character of love be born in my heart as I demonstrate faith in You to everyone around me. Make me like You, Lord.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: What Are You Giving God To Work With? / Topic: Consequences
Today’s Reading: Lamentations 1; Lamentations 2; Obadiah 1; Revelation 14
Scripture: Lamentations 1:14
"My sins have been bound into a yoke;
by his hands they were woven together.
They have come upon my neck
and the Lord has sapped my strength.
He has handed me over
to those I cannot withstand.
Observation: Here, Jeremiah, speaking in the third person for the nation of Judah, confesses that they have given the Lord "sins" which He has "bound into a yoke." This is a yoke of oppression and punishment against them. But they themselves provided the raw material of which their future, this "yoke," was created.
Application: The way I live gives the Lord the raw material to create my future. My choices determine what it is that God will use to either harm me or bless me. The truth is that many folks want to sow their wild oats when they are young and then later they pray for crop failure! But the Bible tells us, "Whatever seeds a person plants, that's the kind of crop that will grow. Whether seeds of good and Godly things that will bring a beneficial crop of blessing, or selfish and sinful seeds that will bring a deadly harvest of destruction. Don't be deceived, you can't outfox God." (PMS* Paraphrase)
Bottom line: Don't give God garbage unless you want to spend eternity in the dump. Let Him live His glorious power out through your life and you can spend eternity with Him.
Prayer: Lord, I want to plant good seeds because a want a great harvest. I want a crown of reward, not a yoke of punishment. Empower me to live by faith in Your positive power of blessing and righteous living.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Be Careful What You Ask For / Topic: Vows
Today’s Reading: Jeremiah 42; Jeremiah 43; Jeremiah 44; Psalm 48; Revelation 13
Scripture: Jeremiah 42:3-6, 19-22
3 Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do."
4 "I have heard you," replied Jeremiah the prophet. "I will certainly pray to the LORD your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the LORD says and will keep nothing back from you."
5 Then they said to Jeremiah, "May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the LORD your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the LORD our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the LORD our God..."
19 "O remnant of Judah, the LORD has told you, 'Do not go to Egypt.' Be sure of this: I warn you today 20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the LORD your God and said, 'Pray to the LORD our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.' 21 I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the LORD your God in all he sent me to tell you. 22 So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place where you want to go to settle."
Observation: These people asked Jeremiah to seek God on their behalf and made a vow to follow whatever answer Jeremiah brought. But when the answer came, and they didn't like it, they just decided not to follow it! They broke their vow because the word didn't fit their predetermined desire.
Application: Be careful what you ask for. If I tell the Lord I will follow Him no matter what, I had better be prepared for an interesting trip. God is not a tame animal. He does not do tricks on command. He commands, we do the tricks. At least that's how it's supposed to work. So don't make rash statements. Count the cost before you commit. And once you commit, keep your word.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You call me to follow You -- to take up my cross daily -- to not turn back. Help me to have the courage, dedication, and strength of character to do just that. I want to keep all my promises to You. May it be so.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Unstoppable / Topic: Courage
Today’s Reading: 2 Kings 25; 2 Chronicles 36; Jeremiah 40; Jeremiah 41; Revelation 12
Scripture: Revelation 12:11
They overcame him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
Observation: This powerful description of courageous disciples of Jesus Christ is inspiring. These are overcoming individuals of great personal character and daring. And like their Lord, they suffer, some even to the point of death. And like Jesus, they do not consider death to be the worst thing that could happen to them. They know that worse than death would be to succumb to the pressure and turn away from the Lord. Notice that their overcoming "tools" are "the blood of the Lamb" (which has implications for our salvation, cleansing, and communion with Jesus in His death), and "the word of their testimony" (which communicates a bold, unyielding declaration of who they are because of Jesus). They are unstoppable, and even though some are killed, they overcome the enemy. Death is not losing. It can be a gateway to victory.
Application: Oh to be like these. And in truth, some of us may be called to do just that for this is a prophecy of a time yet to come.
Prayer: Lord, ready me and all Your people to stand strong. This world does not accept the bright light of truth and those who dare to live radically in that kind of light face nearly constant rejection and even confrontation. The days will grow darker and "the love of most will grow cold." Enable me to stand strong, and overcome the enemy of my soul.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Ultimate Justice / Topic: Judgment Day
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 29; Ezekiel 30; Ezekiel 31; Ezekiel 32; Revelation 11
Scripture: Revelation 11:18
The nations were angry; and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your saints and those who reverence your name,
both small and great—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth."
Observation: Judgment day is coming. This verse chronicles the future day when it all comes down to what God has to say. "The nations were angry..." So what? Be angry all you want, but it makes no difference because it is judgment day. It is the time of rewards and punishments. Rewards for God's servants the prophets, his saints, and those who reverence His name. And a time of punishment, destruction for those whose actions "destroy the earth."
Application: Hang in there. Justice is coming. We live in a world where satan is in operational control (see my blog on the subject), but he will be put in his place, and all those who cooperated with him will suffer.
When I feel the injustice of suffering for doing good, I need to remind myself that ultimate justice is coming. God will reward the faithful and punish the evil doers. So do not become weary in doing what's right, for in due time, we will reap a harvest if we continue and do not give up.
Prayer: Lord, I rejoice that You are the Great Judge and that Your Honor and Goodness and Justice will se the agenda on Judgment Day. Help me to focus on pleasing You no matter the fallout. I look forward to Your coming. Maranatha, come quickly, Lord.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Mystery / Topic: The Invisible Realm
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 25; Ezekiel 26; Ezekiel 27; Ezekiel 28; Revelation 10
Scripture: Revelation 10:1-4
1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down."
Observation: What message did the voices of the seven thunders speak? John was about to write it down, but "a voice from heaven" told him not to. Why? I wish I could say, "God explained it to me," but He hasn't so, why lie? The truth is, I don't know. Nobody does.
Application: What this speaks to me is the truth that the invisible spiritual realm is both invisible and spiritual. (Wow, profound, huh?) Seriously, though, because it is invisible, I cannot see it -- because it is spiritual, I cannot figure it out. It is a mystery. Mystery is something we like in novels and motion pictures, but not much in church. But while we have certain things of which we can be sure (the Bible is God's word; God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Jesus death and resurrection is the only means of gaining a right standing before God), even these have elements of mystery that we cannot fully understand. (And there is plenty of truly weird stuff in the Bible that we can'r really understand.) Paul wrote "now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror." (And the mirrors of Paul's day weren't as good as ours.) So we don't see clearly, and sometimes it seems backwards.
Bottom line: HUMILITY. We have to have humility and say, "I don't understand it all," and even sometimes, "I don't understand at all." But faith sometimes means trusting beyond the headlights. God has chosen to limit how far I can see and yet He says, "trust Me." I do.
Prayer: Lord, I do trust in You and I do trust You. I thank You that You have shrouded truth from us humans -- that You reveal it as You see fit. Help us to trust, obey, and marvel at You. You are the great, mighty, eternal, compassionate, merciful, mysterious, sovereign Lord.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Drastic Call / Topic: Sacrifice
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 22; Ezekiel 23; Ezekiel 24; Revelation 9
Scripture: Ezekiel 24:15-19
[Ezekiel's Wife Dies]
15 The word of the LORD came to me: 16 "Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears. 17 Groan quietly; do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban fastened and your sandals on your feet; do not cover the lower part of your face or eat the customary food of mourners ."
18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded.
19 Then the people asked me, "Won't you tell us what these things have to do with us?"
Observation: God's prophet has been trying to get the message to the people. But they haven't been listening. How to get them to pay attention? It has to be something dramatic -- something drastic. And what God decides to do is shocking. He is going to bring about the death of Ezekiel's wife. The Lord first warns Ezekiel, and tells him that he is not to follow the customs of mourning. He is to show no outward grief.
How painful this had to be for Ezekiel. (I believe it was also painful for God as well.) But it works! After he does not mourn his wife's death, he writes, "Then the people asked me, 'Won't you tell us what these things have to do with us?'" This drastic signal got their attention and made them listen.
Application: Ezekiel (and his wife) were called to great sacrifice here, even beyond the immense sacrifice of their life and ministry. The goal was to get the people to listen, to ask, to seek. And it would be tough to do. Ezekiel knew this when he was first called. (Read the early chapters of Ezekiel.)
The application is that those who are called to God are called to give their lives to God. And giving your life to God sometimes means you give your life for God (i.e. you die). If a person is not ready to die, he is not ready to truly serve God. In fact, the call to salvation itself is a call to die. Baptism is a sign but also a foreshadowing. Jesus said "take up your cross daily."
Like Jesus, we must be willing to die that others may live. Ezekiel and his wife were willing to live out this drastic call. I respect and admire them so much. And God has called us who serve Him today to no less dramatic service.
Prayer: Lord, may I be found worthy to live and die for You. May I not shrink back from paying any price that others may live -- that heaven might be full and hell empty. Forgive me for my wimpy ways -- and empower me to take the challenge to step up and give my all.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Good Fear / Topic: Knowing God
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 20; Ezekiel 21; Psalm 111; Revelation 8
Scripture: Psalm 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise.
Observation: "The fear of the Lord" -- what does this phrase mean? I generally think of fear as a bad thing. I surely don't want to be motivated or dominated by fear. But "the fear of the Lord" must be a good thing. I think it is a holy awe that comes from a deep knowledge of just Who God is.
Application: If I understand God, I will live wisely. If I truly know the dramatic breadth of His influence, power, awareness, justice, etc., it would cause me to tremble in my boots. God sees and knows all. But if I surrender to this awesome God and submit to His power and will, then I am welcomed into His Kingdom and I receive the privilege of receiving His blessings.
Bottom line: To walk in fear of the Lord is not to be afraid that if I step out of line, He will zap me. No, it is to be aware of my own tendency to step out of line which causes me to miss out on the amazing blessings of living in line with His purposes. I don't want to miss out.
Prayer: Lord, help! I want to know You, and to fear You as I should. I am a man fraught with failings that lead me to things other than You. Help me not to settle for good things, but to get the best: You. Change my nature by the amazing power of Your love.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Repent-Ready / Topic: Spiritual Life
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 17; Ezekiel 18; Ezekiel 19; Revelation 7
Scripture: Ezekiel 18:32 ...Repent and live!
Observation: God appeals to His people to change their lives. The above phrase from verse 32 is the climax to that appeal. The phrase is one of the basic rules of spiritual life: "Repent and live." That is, true spiritual life is only possible as we repent. Repent means to change positively toward God's will.
Application: I must be repent-ready: always prepared to bend, shift, redirect, or reorient my life based on the promptings of God. I need to recognize my propensity toward missing the mark (sin) and brokenness (the results of sin). This keeps me humble and seeking and available to God's direction.
Bottom line: Constant repentance is the only truly spiritual lifestyle. It must be cultivated and maintained. Repentance is not a one-time event. Repentance is a long-term way of life.
Prayer: Lord, I want to repent and live. I purpose to be constantly "on the stretch" for You. I desire to attune my ears, head, and heart to Your voice, and keep myself pliable to Your will. Help me to do so more and more.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Moment Of Truth / Topic: Judgment
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 15; Ezekiel 16; Psalm 70; Revelation 6
Scripture: Revelation 6:15-17
15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"
Observation: Kings, princes, general, the rich, the powerful -- at this one moment they are just like everyone else. Facing the wrath of God and the judgment of God has the effect of stripping away all of our human inventions of pride, prestige, and power. The earmarks of fame, fortune, power. and pleasure fall away as every person is confronted with God's great day of wrath.
Application: This is just another reminder that there are things that bring comfort here on this earth that are ultimately worthless. If a person has not made the decision to surrender and submit to God, then a rude awakening awaits.
Bottom line: Seek first God and the things of God, and let the other things come as God gives the opportunity and the blessing. This is not a one-time decision -- it is a daily decision.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that I and everything I have belongs to You. I thank You, Father, that Jesus took my punishment upon Himself and died for my sins so that I will not have to face Your wrath. Help me to live mindful of Your blessings and focused on You as my first priority. Thank You for the many blessings You have poured on me. May I never be distracted by the gifts but may I always find my delight in You, the Giver.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Whitewash / Topic: Truth
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 12; Ezekiel 13; Ezekiel 14; Revelation 5
Scripture: Ezekiel 13:10-12
10 Because they lead my people astray, saying, "Peace," when there is no peace, and because, when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with whitewash, 11 therefore tell those who cover it with whitewash that it is going to fall. Rain will come in torrents, and I will send hailstones hurtling down, and violent winds will burst forth. 12 When the wall collapses, will people not ask you, "Where is the whitewash you covered it with?"
Observation: Lies are flimsy walls, in spite of the fact that they can be dressed up to look nice. But even the best coat of whitewash does not provide any substance and structure. Only that can be provided by truth. There is no substitute for truth.
Application: Lies and falsehoods may work for awhile. But there will come a time when all lies will be shown for what they are. They will not be able to hold up under the strain of life. And they will collapse.
Bottom line: Live and speak the truth. It may seem easier to act and speak to please others, saying and doing what people want to hear and see, but that is only true in the short term. Ultimately, all falsehood will fail. Live and speak the truth.
Prayer: Lord, I don't want to live a whitewashed life. And I don't want to whitewash Your truth, no matter how socially unacceptable it seems sometimes. Give me the voice of truth and an earnest and sincere heart. And may everything I say be seasoned with Your grace.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: He Sees / Topic: God's View
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 8; Ezekiel 9; Ezekiel 10; Ezekiel 11; Revelation 4
Scripture: Ezekiel 8:12 He said to me, "Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, 'The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.'"
Observation: In a vision, Ezekiel is shown the leaders of Israel worshipping idols. Each is doing it in in his own home -- they think that no one can see. (God even tells Ezekiel, "They say, 'The LORD does not see us...") The problem with their thinking is that they are wrong, God does see -- and He also shows what they are doing to Ezekiel.
Application: In reality, it is not a problem that God sees. It is actually a safeguard. I am glad that God has His eye on me -- that He is watching me -- that He is looking out for me. This provides many benefits to my life: safety, security, accountability, motivation. It also advances the truth that God loves me because one of the earmarks of love is attention. But because "God is watching," I need to be mindful to do right (that's the motivation I mentioned earlier). But since I love God and want to please Him and do His will, this only reinforces the good, spiritual motivation that I want to have in my life anyway.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I know You have Your eyes on me -- You have been observing me -- You know me. And the amazing thing about that is that You love me anyway. I know that You use what You observe in me to direct help and good things and people I need into my life. Assist and empower me to live in a way that makes You proud of me.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The Extreme Call / Topic: Sacrifice
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 4; Ezekiel 5; Ezekiel 6; Ezekiel 7; Revelation 3
Scripture: Ezekiel 4:4-6
4 "Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the house of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. 5 I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the house of Israel.
6 "After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the house of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year."
Observation: Poor Ezekiel! Every time I read through this passage, I feel so sorry for Ezekiel. 430 day laying on his side! Ouch. (And he didn't have a Sleep Number Bed.) Plus, he had to camp out and build his camp fire with cow manure. Yum! What fun!
Application: This is such an extreme call. It makes me glad for the call that I have. I can sometimes complain to God about my "hardships." I think God must smile at my complaints. When I look at Ezekiel's call, I realize that I have it easy.
Ezekiel's call was something that God knew he could do. And my call is something that God knows I can do. And every person's call is something that God know he or she can do. Of course, regardless of one's specific call, none of us can do it on our own. I must have God's empowerment. I need to humbly seek Him that I may be able answer His call to the utmost of the opportunity that God has given.
Prayer: Lord, I want to answer Your call with excellence. I want You to be pleased with what You see and hear in me. And thank You, Lord, for the high privilege of being called to Your service. Empower me to do it well.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: The God Of The Second Chance / Topic: Grace
Today’s Reading: Ezekiel 1; Ezekiel 2; Ezekiel 3; Revelation 2
Scripture: Ezekiel 1:1-3
1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.
2 On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin- 3 the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the LORD was upon him.
Observation: I love the fact that God speaks to Ezekiel and gives him visions even though he and the rest of God's people have been exiled to Babylon because of their pathological rebellion. God's great graciousness is so evident! He does not abandon or forget His people. He reached out to them even as they are in the midst of the justly deserved consequences that He Himself has brought upon them.
Application: God does not stop loving me no matter what. And the range of His reach is unlimited. It transcends church, or other settings of seeking Him. He can and does find me even in the middle of the messes I make for myself. And He lovingly calls to me.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for Your gracious faithful ways. You continue to seek me and find me when I am the one who wanders away. You continually draw me back and woo me with reminders of the sweet and precious times we have had. This amazes me. Thank You for being the God of the second chance. Help me to respond to Your call and to stay close to You.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Title: Sharing The Struggle / Topic: Endurance
Today’s Reading: Jeremiah 52; Revelation 1; Psalm 143; Psalm 144
Scripture: Revelation 1:9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
Observation: I love the way John wrote this, our "brother and companion in" ...what? In "the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus." WOW! We share these things with John and with every other believer on the planet throughout the ages.
Application:
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Update: My lovely bride, Cynthia, also happened to select the same passage for her devotional blog on this date. Please take the time to read it by clicking here.

Observation: I love the way John wrote this, our "brother and companion in" ...what? In "the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus." WOW! We share these things with John and with every other believer on the planet throughout the ages.
Application:
- the suffering -- the way of Christ is the Calvary Road. "If any man would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." The apostle Paul said this: "I die daily," and this: "dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything." We are companions in suffering.
- the kingdom -- ironically, we also share a kingdom -- an eternal, powerful, amazing kingdom, ruled by our Redeemer and Friend, who Himself shared in our suffering by bearing our sin and shame on the cross. We have a kingdom and a King!
- the patient endurance -- this is what we need to get through the suffering into the kingdom! We must hang onto Jesus and to each other and we will be rewarded in that final day. But for now we share patient endurance.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
